An Introduction to Citing & Referencing

Learn why, what and how to cite and reference your sources

Popular referencing styles

There are various methods for citing resources in research, and the citation style may vary based on the academic discipline, for example:

APA (American Psychological Association) Education, Psychology, Sciences
MLA (Modern Language Association) Humanities
Chicago/Turabian Business, History, Fine Arts
ACS (American Chemical Society) Chemistry
Harvard Geosciences, Mining
IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Engineering

There is no one standard citation style used at the NU.

Your professor is a crucial guide in determining your course's specific referencing style requirements. Their expertise is invaluable, and it is essential to consult with them to ensure you are on the right track.

Use a standard style, such as APA, and maintain consistency throughout your paper. All citations and references must consistently adhere to the chosen style, including punctuation and capitalisation.

Find examples, books, and links to style-related sources in the Citation Styles and Tools guide by NU Library.
