The Impact Factor® (also known as the Journal Impact Factor) is a proprietary product in Journal Citation ReportsTM (JCR), owned by Clarivate Analytics.
It is possible to check the JCR Quartile Category for individual journals by searching for records in the Web of Science and then clicking on the name of the journal in the lists of records or the "View Journal Information" in records for articles. The Journal Citation ReportsTM metric is also available in the IEEE Xplore database where applicable.
A Journal Impact Factor of 4.4 for a particular journal would mean that, on average, articles published in that journal during the previous two years have been cited 4.4 times.
The Impact Factor is not field-normalised, meaning that it does not take into account variations in citation behaviours in different disciplines, e.g. there is a tendency for life sciences journals to have higher Impact Factors than social sciences journals. The Impact Factor should, therefore, only be used when making comparisons within the same discipline.
