Read & Publish Agreement

Read and Publish Agreement or Transformative Agreement includes the Article Processing Charge (APC) in the fee that institutions pay for their subscription to publishers. This fee not only covers the cost of accessing (reading) research outputs but also includes the Open Access publishing cost (APC) for authors in certain journals from the publisher's collection. In these agreements, authors usually get to keep the copyright for their articles, and the articles are published under Creative Commons licenses, allowing flexible reuse and broader sharing of research. The outcome is that articles published through these agreements become freely accessible in journals following either the Gold or Hybrid models for Open Access.

Why Publishing Open Access?

6 key benefits

  1. Increased visibility and accessibility: Open access publishing makes research freely available online, allowing anyone with internet access to read, download, and share the content. This dramatically increases the potential audience and reach of the research.
  2. Faster dissemination of knowledge: Open access enables new ideas and research findings to be dispersed more rapidly, which can spur further innovation and new research studies.
  3. Greater impact and citations: Studies show that open access articles tend to receive more citations than those published through traditional subscription-based models. This increased impact is due to the wider accessibility.
  4. Support for the knowledge economy: Businesses and the public can more easily access the latest scientific research, allowing them to build upon and apply these insights.
  5. Alignment with funder mandates: Many research funders now require or encourage open access publishing to maximize the public benefit of funded research.
  6. Potential cost savings: While there are some upfront costs associated with the transition to open access, studies have shown there can be long-term cost savings for institutions and the research ecosystem as a whole.
