Learn some tips & tricks to improve your Google searches as well as how to get the best out of Google Scholar

Google Books is a search service offered for books that Google scans and stores into its digital database and magazine archives, such as Life Magazine, New York Magazine, Ebony, and Popular Science.

Advantages:

  • Discovering books in public domain;
  • Searching where to borrow or purchase;
  • Searching for full-text, phrases, keywords not appear in an online catalog.

Concerns:

  • Copyright issues;
  • Poor sort or filter for given results;
  • Inaccuracy in details.

 

Search with keyword, title, author or ISBN. You can sort the results by access type, document (books, magazine), year of publication.

The Advanced Book Search is hidden under the Tools and appears only after you have performed a search

The offered options are to search with main book details, keyword or phrase search, availability, access (license type) etc.

On the item page, there is Search within the book and navigation bar on the left-hand side.

The books and magazines are digitized and published on Google books under different licenses.

Books in the public domain

You can view the full-text of books or download a copy of the eBook as a PDF. The filters can be applied to the results or in the advanced search options

 

Books protected under copyright

  • only preview of some pages, chapters

 

  • snippets view shows basic information about the book and a few sentences to display your search term in context.

  • no preview

On the About Book page is displayed the full bibliographic information, libraries, and shops. You can also download citations to use in reference management tools (Mendeley, EndNote, Zotero).

The sharing option is offered with the links or code to be embedded on the website.
