Selecting a Journal for Publication: Why to Publish?

This guide provides some recommendations and criteria for selecting a journal for publication; introduces with Open Access and Predatory Publishing.

1. Scientific Communication

Published scientific articles about results and findings of research activities are scientific communication tools worldwide. Accordingly, results of published articles are:

      - Discussed and checked;
      - Confirmed or denied;
      - Used in the planning of other studies by other researchers. 

2. Productivity & Impact of a Researcher

By publishing articles researchers determine and keep up their h-index. h-index is a measurement used to evaluate the productivity and impact of researchers based on the number of received citations of published articles. 

h-index can be tracked through Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar

3. Academic Ranks (Applies only for Kazakhstani Researchers)

Terms of awarding academic titles (associate professor (docent) and professor)

  • Web Of Science Core collection - Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index
  • Scopus with CiteSCore at over 35% in the core subject area
  • JStore.

Terms of awarding academic degrees (PhD)

  • Scopus with CiteSCore at over 25% in the core subject area;
  • JStore, zbMath, MathScinet, Astrophysical journal.

4. University Rank

Research productivity of the university is monitored as one of indicators used in the vast majority of international and national university ranking systems. Therefore, as a member of the university, each researcher contributes to achieve goals set for the university.
