Science Communication

How to effectively communicate your research to science and non-science community

Poster presentations

Poster presentation is a visual communication method that displays an abstract of your research.

Things to consider:

Content - Focus the information presented to the main points, provide only a few supporting details.

Design - Check the poster layout, structure, font size and style, color contrast, and citations. Some include interactive components allowing user experience.

Delivery - Prepare a 2-3 minute oral explanation of your work and make sure that your poster is visible.

Poster Session Tips

Content.  Your poster is a supporting aid to your speech. Only use 300-800 words.

Design. Aside from considering the layout and other specifications, make your poster interactive by adding sound buttons, 3D images, transparencies, moveable parts for questions and answers, hinged pieces, etc. Also pay attention to the paper and printing quality

Delivery. Keep in mind that poster sessions are a short presentation. See the guide section on delivering a presentation for more tips.

  • Prepare a 2-3 minute oral explanation of your work
  • Do not block the view of your poster - stand to the side
  • Anticipate questions
  • Be outgoing, to market yourself and your research
