The young capital of Kazakhstan recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Astana is in the top ten most attractive tourist cities in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), as reported on turstat.com.

Kazakh is the state language in Kazakhstan. Russian can be officially used on a level with Kazakh language.

Here are few useful words and phrases in Kazakh:

Hello (formal)  - Сәлеметсіз бе? - [Sə-le-'met-siz-be]
Hello (casual) - Сәлем! - [Sə-'lem]
Yes - Иә -[i:-'ә]
No  - Жоқ - [zhɔ:q] (zh as in mea-sure)
Thank you - Рахмет!  - [rah-'met]
Good bye (formal) - Сау болыңыз! - [sau bo-leu-'ŋeuz]
Good bye (casual) - Сау бол! [sau bol]

 

Electrical outlets and plugs in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan uses power outlets and plugs of types C & F. Take a look at the pictures below to see what these plugs and power sockets look like:

  • Type C - The standard European plug. Commonly used in Europe, South-America and Asia, but also in quite a few other countries. Plugs of type E and F will also fit in a type C outlet.

  • Type F - Used in almost all European countries and Russia. Also known as the Schuko plug. Plugs of type C and E will also fit in a type F socket.

Currency

Tenge () is the official currency of Kazakhstan. Because most places you visit will be able to take your credit or debit cards, you don’t need to take much cash.

You can exchange your money or buy tenge at the airport (24/7) or in the bank offices inside shopping malls of Astana like Mega Silk Way (which is located next to Nazarbayev University campus (venue of the conference) from 10.00 am until 10.00 pm.

International ATMs are available both on campus and shopping malls in the city.

Standard time in Kazakhstan is either UTC+05:00 or UTC+06:00. These times apply throughout the year as Kazakhstan does not observe Daylight saving time.

Climate in Astana

In Astana, the summers are long, comfortable, dry, and partly cloudy and the winters are long, frigid, snowy, windy, and overcast. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from -20°C to +26°C and is rarely below -31°C or above +32°C.
