MLA Referencing Guide: Sample Works Cited: Other Sources

This libguide provides basic description and overview on how to cite sources using MLA citation format.

Other Sources

For Online sources, MLA Handbook suggests following this format: 

Author. "Title." Title of container (self contained if book), Other contributors (translators or editors), Version (edition), Number (vol. and/or no.), Publisher, Publication Date, Location (pages, paragraphs and/or URL, DOI or permalink). 2nd container’s title, Other contributors, Version, Number, Publisher, Publication date, Location, Date of Access (if applicable).

Some Basic Rules

The MLA Formatting and Style Guide from Purdue University's Online Writing Lab (OWL) offers formatting guidelines and examples of in-text citations.

Some basic rules:

  • Uses “Works Cited” for reference list; 
  • Seasons are lowercase (e.g. spring 2019)
  • Full dates are given in this format: 28 Aug. 2012 
  • Abbreviate months with names longer than 4 letters (e.g. Jan. / Aug.)
  • Use UP for University Press (e.g. Harvard UP)
